Hi Özge, you joined Hellmann Turkey in February 2023. Tell us a bit about your background and your current role.

Özge Özgül: I've been in the logistics industry for around two decades, and it’s safe to say that I have gathered extensive knowledge and experience during that time. About six months ago, I joined Hellmann as the Airfreight Product Manager to leverage product development locally. Based at our Istanbul headquarters, my role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including managing operations, customer services, pricing, and physical operations at the airport. It's been an exciting journey since I came on board!

Could you shed light on the establishment of Perishable Logistics in Turkey?

Absolutely. Hellmann has always been a frontrunner in perishable airfreight, capitalizing on its global station network, local market expertise, and product-specific handling proficiency. When our Global Director Airfreight Perishables Nataša Solano-Veselá joined earlier this year, we are reasserting our global position in perishables.
Turkey, as a major exporter of perishable goods, holds strategic significance and so Perishables Logistics was established in Turkey to cater to the growing demand for efficient and specialized logistics services in the country. We see a great potential for substantial growth in handling perishable exports to markets like the Middle East and the Far East. It was the logical next step to establish Perishable Logistics as a specialized vertical within a already strong Airfreight team.

How is the Airfreight team structured in Turkey, and what are your strengths?

Currently, we have a growing team dedicated to airfreight exports and imports in Istanbul and Izmir. This setup allows us to provide comprehensive airfreight services for our clients. In terms of strengths, our network, both domestic and international, and our deep understanding of airfreight dynamics play a pivotal role. We always find the best route for our clients! Moreover, we leverage advanced technologies, including Hellmann's SmartAir! solution, which monitors factors like temperature, light, and shock during transit. This enables us to take timely actions, preventing wastage and ensuring that the fresh produces arrives at the destination in a perfect condition.

Can you provide examples of the types of fresh produce you handle?

We handle quite a wide range of fresh produce, spanning from frozen fish and vegetables to delicate fruits like cherries, figs, and grapes. Our expertise also extends to chocolate, dry foods, nuts and mushrooms. Each of these items demands ist own unique meticulous handling procedures. We fully comprehend the intricate complexities involved and attend to every minute detail throughout the logistics process.

What are the main trends you are observing in the perishable logistics market?

The market is witnessing an increase of capacity, with rates stabilizing to pre-pandemic levels. Additionally, sustainability is a growing focus. This aligns perfectly with our company’s commitment to a Cleaner Logistics. Take the SmartAir! solution as an example. The technology goes beyond monitoring to actively prevent issues that could lead to wastage of food and all aspects related to food production like water resources or labor. We're dedicated to finding optimal routes that minimize environmental impact while ensuring efficient deliveries.
