"We want to create innovative solutions for supply chain problems"

Focus

Hello Jan! Could you please tell us how the collaboration with Dronamics came about?

Jan Kleine-Lasthues: Certainly. Dronamics is a start-up founded nine years ago by two brothers. The company has since become a leading developer and operator of cargo drones. For the past two years, we have been working together to develop a concept for drone transportation. Initially, the focus was on using drones for cross-border transport. However, over time, our vision evolved. We didn't want to simply drop packages from the air; we wanted to create truly innovative solutions for supply chain problems.

That's really exciting! Could you tell us more about the capabilities of these drones?

The drones can fly an impressive 2,500 kilometers and carry up to 350 kilograms of cargo. The emphasis was not only on flight performance but also on how we can create real value in the supply chain. The fuel consumption per kilogram of transported goods is much lower than with conventional air freight or other means of transportation, allowing us to offer genuinely sustainable solutions.

How are the drones operated?

Currently, the drones are remotely controlled by pilots and do not fly fully autonomously. At least initially, we will use smaller airports that are also used by private aircraft and lighter planes. This allows us to operate closer to pick-up and destination points and minimize the use of trucks. We want to optimize the connection to existing infrastructure.

Where are the first commercial flights planned to go?

We plan to launch our first commercial flights in Greece, especially to the remote Greek islands. These islands often face shortages as some of them are only supplied by ferry every few days. We want to step in and enable daily deliveries. Initially, our focus will be on urgently needed goods like medicines and perishable items. In the future, we also see opportunities in e-commerce and similar applications as we conduct more flights.

How do you see the future of the air freight industry in terms of drone transportation?

I think traditional airfreight will remain in place for the time being. We see ourselves as a complement, not a replacement, for existing solutions. Our drones will open up new possibilities and fill gaps in the supply chain that were previously untapped. The flexibility and speed we can offer will play a crucial role.

Thank you, Jan, for these insights into the collaboration with Dronamics. Is there anything else you'd like to share with our readers?

Thank you as well. We are firmly committed to conducting our first commercial flights later this year and shaping the future of drone transportation. We are truly excited about the opportunities that are emerging and look forward to making a positive impact on supply chains worldwide.
